Be yourself, always | An Evaluation of Personal Development at Co-op Academy Belle Vue

At Co-op Academy Belle Vue, our commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement recently led us to undergo a thorough external review of our personal development provision. Conducted by a serving Ofsted inspector specialising in personal development, the review spanned an entire academy day.

Collaborating closely with the Assistant Vice Principal for Personal Development, the evaluation was comprehensive, including insights from a deep dive into the PD provision and curriculum, student voice and staff voice.

Our pride in the robustness of our personal development program at Co-op Academy Belle Vue is reflected in its comprehensive coverage of various facets of school life, such as RSHE, PSHE, SMSC, Citizenship, Character, British Values, and Wider Opportunities.

The review examined each of these areas, producing key findings that we are eager to share with our community:

Findings:

  • The Lead can demonstrate how a clear and ‘lived’ intent for the ‘Care Curriculum’ is fully woven through the core ethos of the Academy.
  • The current programme already provides a very strong provision
  • The PD curriculum (CARE Curriculum) is very strong.
  • The programme is coherently organised and sequenced across all the statutory themes with input from other academic subjects being mapped.
  • The ‘Electives’ system means that all students here will access a broad, rich and diverse range of learning opportunities and experiences which will support their personal development.
  • Students value the importance of personal development and spoke fluently, reflectively and maturely about their learning to date.
  • Staff delivering the Care Curriculum feel enabled, confident and enthused by the programme.
  • Student feedback on the CARE Curriculum was hugely positive.
  • Students value CARE curriculum lessons on a par with core subjects in terms of importance.
  • Teachers delivering the curriculum are knowledgeable and committed.
  • Students have a fluent response regarding British Values and Protected Characteristics
  • Occurrences of inappropriate language are very rare. No racism, misogyny or homophobia cited.
  • There is a wide range of fundraising, charity-based and leadership roles.
