Media Cubs - Youth Takeover Day at Manchester Metropolitan University

We visited Manchester Metropolitan University's School of Digital Arts to film our own TV show about staying safe in our community.

Media Cubs is a pop-up TV studio and newsroom providing young people of all ages the opportunity to create, debate, and navigate news with confidence. We were invited to join their pop-up newsroom at Manchester Metropolitan University in their School of Digital Arts. Our TV show, Youth Unleashed, explores how young people can feel safe in their community.

We began the day with a discussion about our local community, identifying challenges and factors that make young people feel unsafe. Afterward, we developed a plan of action to address these concerns before writing a script to convey our message on TV.

Next, we took our script to the film studios in the School of Art and Design, where we learnt how to use broadcast cameras. Students took on different roles throughout the production, including presenting, directing, operating the cameras, and controlling the light and sound of the studio. The students rotated through these roles, ensuring everyone had the chance to try something new.

During the production, we interviewed two special guests: Kerin from Hideout and Muhammed (Abz) from UA92 to ask how they are supporting young people in our community.

A big thank you to Media Cubs and Manchester Metropolitan University for giving us this opportunity. We cannot wait to see the end result!
